R.I.P. John Hughes
John Hughes is one of my favorite comedy writers/directors/producers of all-time, so I was sad to read that he passed away today at the age of 59. Hughes got his start in Chicago writing copy for advertisements, and his first foray into comedy involved selling jokes to well-known acts like Rodney Dangerfield and writing satirical articles for National Lampoon Magazine. Hughes began to experience success in the movie industry in 1983 after writing the screenplay for National Lampoon’s Vacation. His directorial debut came in the 1984 film Sixteen Candles, and he just kept cranking out classic comedies for over a decade. It’s hard to name my favorite John Hughes film since there are so many to choose from, but I decided to compile a video tribute of my top five. It’s definitely a subject which is open to debate, but here’s my personal ranking.
Honorable Mention: Dutch (1991), The Great Outdoors (1988), & Uncle Buck (1989) – which narrowly missed my list
5: Weird Science (The best video I could find is all about the badassedness of Chet Donelly…which isn’t a bad thing) -
4: Planes, Trains & Automobiles -
3: The Breakfast Club -
2: Ferris Bueller’s Day Off -
