Anvil! The Story of Anvil
Last year around this time, a documentary film was released titled Anvil! The Story of Anvil. No, this wasn’t a movie detailing the history of blacksmiths or the ACME corporation, but rather a tale that revolved around two members of a lowly, aging band who refuse to give up on their ultimate goal. When hair metal and androgynous rock stars were at the peak of their popularity in the 1980′s, Steve “Lips” Kudlow and Robb Reiner’s band opened up for some of the most successful acts of the day. Yet while bands like Whitesnake, the Scorpions, and Bon Jovi would consistently go on to play sold out arenas and rake in millions from record sales over the years, Anvil never achieved the success that they once believed was inevitable. Even after their 1982 album Metal on Metal was widely acclaimed by fans, sold millions of copies, and inspired numerous future heavy metal bands, Anvil somehow fell into obscurity instead of rising to the top of the heavy metal charts. Director Sacha Gervasi does an excellent job at providing an honest and in-depth look at two guys who refuse to let their dream die (it has been over 30 years since they formed the band), and the end product is one of the best documentaries I’ve ever seen. I wouldn’t embed the whole movie if I didn’t think it was worth your time, so sit back and enjoy the sweet sounds of Anvil.
