A Breast For An Eye

I am usually not the type of person who gets involved in initiatives or movements (excluding my morning bathroom trip), but it’s not for a lack of caring in most instances. Like a lot of other Amurricans, I often get caught up in my own little self-serving bubble of indifference, or fall prey to the “what can I do?” mentality. Yet every now and then, an issue will arise that I strongly advocate. After reading an article about the following organization’s fight for equality, I urge all of you to support this cause on Sunday, August 22 – even though the group is actually fighting for a lack of support, so to speak. Here’s some Q&A information straight from the group’s website, which provides details about their beliefs, and the upcoming national protest:
GoTopless.org
Welcome to GoTopless.org! – We are a US organization, claiming that women have the same constitutional right to be bare chested in public places as men.
Why a National GoTopless Protest day? Gotopless.org claims constitutional equality between men and women on being topless in public. Currently, women who dare to be topless in public in the US are repeatedly being arrested, fined, humiliated, criminalized. On Sunday August 22nd, 2010, topless women will rally in great numbers across the USA to protest this gross inequality in the law and will demand that their fundamental right to be topless be acknowledged where men already enjoy that right according to the 14th amendment of the Constitution.
How are we helping women? GoTopless is committed to helping women perceive their breasts as noble (I thought I had heard pretty much every adjective used to describe women’s breasts until reading this), natural parts of their anatomy (whether they are nursing or not). Breasts shouldn’t have to be “modestly” or shamefully hidden from public view any more than arms, legs or feet.
How are we helping men? GoTopless is also committed to helping men differentiate between nudity and sexuality. If the presence of a topless woman in public triggers a sexual impulse, it can easily be controlled in the same way men control themselves when they see a woman wearing a mini skirt or revealing ample cleavage. Men manage to appreciate these things while still showing respect! Choosing consciousness above hormones leads to a peaceful, respectful society providing additional freedom and beauty. This is all true, but I’d say this free-wheeling, bare-chested bonanza would definitely result in more car accidents among men – see “The Caddy” episode from Seinfeld.
Who can participate? We welcome everyone! GoTopless was founded by the Raelian Movement, which recognizes that life on Earth was created by advanced extraterrestrial scientists. These scientists, both male and female, used their mastery of genetic engineering to create humans in their own image (breasts included!). Wait…what?!? I find it odd that they just throw this bizarre nugget – or nuggette – on a homepage that’s intended to give the group credibility, only to see all of it vanish when they mention the belief that we were built by an alien race of geneticists. Even if this were true, I’d have to say they did a pretty shitty construction job for such an advanced race of people – As the great Bill Hicks once said, “We’re viruses with shoes!”
