Even though the following clip looks an awfully lot like a scene from those old The Gods Must Be Crazy movies, it is actually part of a 1976 documentary by filmmaker Jean Pierre Dutilleux about a remote tribe in Papua New Guinea known as the Toulambi. It is obvious from the video that this encounter marks the first time anyone in the tribe has seen a white man before, and pretty much any other object that was invented or made in the last 1000 years. Needless to say, the Toulambi tribesmen are both apprehensive and a little frightened by what they see. And if they knew anything whatsoever about the white man’s historical track record when it comes to the treatment of “uncivilized people,” the tribe would understand that their fears are completely justified.
